MP. Nora Arissian to ST: US must be held to account for its war crimes in Syria

The United States should not be within the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) and it should be held to account for its crimes in Syria, the Syrian Member of Parliament Dr. Nora Arissian told the Syriatimes e-newspaper Thursday.

The MP made it clear that the main reason for the US withdrawal from the UNHRC,  is Washington’s loyalty to Israel and its interests.

“The US Administration could not take UNHRC criticism of Israel’s savage practices against unarmed civilians and its violation of human rights. Therefore, it withdrew from the council,” Dr. Arissian said, adding that when the United States fails to have hegemony over any organization in the United Nations, it withdraws from it.

She referred to the US withdrawal from the UNESCO and the Paris Climate Agreement.

“I think, the US withdrawal from the UNHRC won’t have big effect on the work of the council whose mission has been limited to certain issues and not to actually protect human rights. the parliamentarian said.

UN organizations’ decline

She asserted that the continuity of war crimes being perpetrated by the US-led Coalition against humanity and Syrian people prove the decline of UN organizations in applying international law and UN Charter’s principles.

“In fact, the United States should not be within the UNHRC and it should be held to account for its crimes in Syria,” Dr. Arissian affirmed, pointing out that the Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates has repeatedly called on the UN to shoulder its responsibility towards protecting international security and peace.

The MP concluded by saying: “ The US withdrawal from UNHRC is indicative of Washington’s weakness and its rejection of multilateralism…This is Trump’s policy…The US policy contradicts international law.”
