Syria, Iran Sign 11 Cooperation Agreements

Damascus, (ST) - Syria and Iran signed here on Monday 11 agreements and memorandum of understanding and an executive program to enhance cooperation between the two countries in the economic, scientific, cultural, infrastructure, services, investment and housing sectors at the end of the 14th session of the Joint Syrian-Iranian Higher Committee held in Damascus

The most prominent cooperation papers signed were the long-term strategic economic cooperation agreement and a memorandum of understanding for the meetings of the Joint Higher Committee signed by Prime Minister Imad Khamis and Dr. Ishaq Jahangiri, First Vice-President of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

The package of agreements included memorandums of understanding between the Ministry of Economy and Foreign Trade of the Syrian Arab Republic and the Ministry of Industry, Mines and Trade of the Islamic Republic of Iran, a memorandum of understanding between the General Establishment of Syrian Railways and Iranian Railways, a memo was signed in the field of public works and housing,

The agreements also included a memorandum of understanding for cooperation in the field of investment promotion between the Syrian Investment Authority and the Organization of Investment and Technical and Economic Assistance of Iran.

 In addition to a memorandum of understanding in the field of geomatics between the General Authority for Remote Sensing in the Syrian Arab Republic and the Organization of Geography in Iran.

A Memorandum of Understanding for Cinema Cooperation was signed between the General Establishment of Cinema in Syria and the Organization of the Audiovisual Cinematography in the Islamic Republic of Iran, a memo was signed between the Anti-Money Laundering and Counterterrorism Authority of Syria and the IRU on cooperation in the exchange of information related to money laundering and terrorist financing.

The two sides also signed the Executive Program for Cultural Cooperation between the Ministry of Culture in Syria and the Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance in Iran for the years 2019-2020-2021. In addition to the signing of the executive program in the field of education "pre-university education" between the governments of the Syrian Arab Republic and the Islamic Republic of Iran for the years 2019, 2020 and 2021.

The Joint Syrian-Iranian Higher Committee held a meeting at the Prime Minister's Office chaired by Premier Khamis on the Syrian side and Dr. Jahangiri on the Iranian side. The meeting reviewed prospects for future cooperation between the two countries on the economic, investment, trade exchange and the results of the technical committee meetings from the two sides during their meetings in Damascus in the past two days.

At the beginning of the meeting, Eng. Khamis confirmed that the visit of the Iranian delegation is an embodiment of the historical relations deeply- rooted between the two brotherly peoples and is considered a message to the world stressing the reality of the special relationship between the two countries in light of the suffering of the two peoples as a result of unilateral economic measures.

For his part, Dr. Jahangiri stressed his country's stand on the side of Syria in the reconstruction and phase as it was in its side in the war on terrorism, calling for pushing and developing economic cooperation relations in all domains to reach the level of distinguished political relations, noting that the meeting of the Joint Higher Committee at its 14th session in Damascus represents a message about the steadfastness of Syria and its entry into the stage of recovery and the start of reconstruction.

During the meeting, the committee discussed means of enhancing cooperation in the fields of electricity, energy, industry, air transport, marine, health, medicine, agriculture, real estate investment and development and the role of the private sector in this cooperation.

During a bilateral meeting, Eng. Khamis and the First Vice-President of the Islamic Republic of Iran discussed ways of enhancing cooperation between the two countries in various economic and investment fields and the importance of laying a solid foundation for this cooperation through long-term strategic agreements that benefit both countries and peoples.

He also underlined the importance of the Joint Syrian-Iranian Higher Committee meetings in Damascus to strengthen relations of economic cooperation in accordance with the vision that achieves the aspirations of the two countries and welcomes the wide participation of the Iranian economic activities in the reconstruction phase in various development, service, economic and tourism projects.

For his part, Dr. Jahangiri expressed his country's desire that the economic relations between Syria and Iran as a model to be followed, indicating that Iranian companies from the public and private sectors looking forward to a broad participation in all service projects and infrastructure projects in the next phase B.
