Syrian-Iranian Talks on Activating Economic, Industrial and Investment Cooperation

Damascus, (ST) -The Minister of Industry, Mohammad Mazen Yousef, discussed here with the Iranian Ambassador in Damascus, Javad Torkabadi, ways to activate the economic and industrial cooperation relations between the two countries and means of transition to executive steps regarding joint projects and put them into implementation as soon as possible.

The talks dealt with means of activating the second Iranian credit line and rehabilitating the destroyed industrial companies, establishing new projects and ensuring the requirements of companies operating for the production, financing and execution of projects, especially in Aleppo, such as the factories of tractors, cables and textiles, establishing a new line in the Syrian Cement Companyin Hama city in addition to develop the work of the Syrian –Iranian Company for Cars Manufacturing (SIAMCO) and reducing production costs in order to increase the competitiveness, especially in the domestic market.

 The minister affirmed the ministry's readiness to work and coordinate with the Iranian side to overcome the difficulties facing industrial cooperation projects between the two countries, pointing out that the priority in the implementation of industrial projects is for Iranian companies.

For his part, the Iranian ambassador expressed his country's readiness to continue the march of industrial cooperation between the two countries and called on the Ministry of Industry to coordinate with the embassy on projects that the ministry wishes to finance and implement according to the Iranian credit line to be studied and nominated by Iranian companies capable of implementation.

Minister of Industry Dr. Nidal Fallouh and Director of Planning and International Cooperation Dr. al Maqled attended the meeting.

Earlier, the Syrian Ambassador to Tehran Dr. Adnan Mahmoud discussed in Tehran with the Iranian Minister of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture, Gholam Hussein Shafei, the possibility of the participation of Iranian companies in investment projects to rehabilitate the industrial and productive sectors according to an economic map.

Mr. Shafie confirmed that the Chamber of Industry and Commerce of Iran has formed a special chamber for investment work in Syria in the light of the joint economic cooperation agreement between Syria and Iran, which is considered the private sector as a partner in the implementation of economic and investment projects that deserve a qualitative leap in the domains of industrial and economic cooperation to serve the interests of the two friendly peoples.

He expressed his country's keenness to push economic cooperation to the level of strategic relations between the two countries and the participation of the private sector in addition to the government to benefit from the potential available in the two countries to establish investment projects in fields of industry, agriculture and services.

For his part, Mr. Mahmoud underlined the role of the private sector in establishing investment projects and working on establishing a joint chamber of commerce to expand the areas of economic and investment cooperation and increase the volume of trade exchange between Syria and Iran by facilitating the flow of goods and products between the two countries.

Mr. Mahmoud pointed out the importance of holding an economic forum for businessmen in Syria and Iran and moving in practical steps in the field of investment projects, where Mr. Shafei welcomed the holding of this forum in Tehran as soon as possible.
