Syria- Belarus to Deepen Cooperation Relations

Damascus, (ST) - Speaker of the People's Assembly Hammouda Sabbagh said that Syria looks forward to further cooperation and coordination in various fields between Syria and the Republic of Belarus.

During his meeting on Thursday with the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Belarus in Damascus Alexander Ponomarev, Mr. Sabbagh pointed to the importance of cooperation between the two countries and of deepening relations between the Syrian People's Assembly and the Belarusian Parliament.

 Mr. Sabbagh noted that the Syrian people highly appreciate the honorable positions of Belarus towards Syria, which has faced a fierce war for seven years. Today, Syria defeated terrorism thanks to the steadfastness of its people and the help of friends and allies.

For his part, the Ambassador of the Republic of Belarus confirmed that his country continues to support Syria at all times and areas. "We have stood with Syria in difficult times and now we see victory soon, so we will support Syria in all areas, not only political but also economic support," he said.

Mr. Ponomarev pointed out that the President of the Republic of Belarus has welcomed the Syrian children who have suffered injuries or psychological damage due to acts of terrorism over two years in Belarus, considering that every Syrian child visiting Belarus is an ambassador and a member of Parliament of Syria.

He pointed out that the work during the next year will focus on consolidating parliamentary relations between the two countries and the development of a plan of action and joint cooperation in addition to the previous cooperation between the two countries.

The Belarusian Ambassador presented a proposal for setting up a joint dialogue table to activate economic cooperation through businessmen and economic experts in the two countries' parliaments to discuss the capabilities of Belarus to support Syria in the reconstruction phase and the industrial, economic and agricultural projects that can be put on the dialogue table.

For his part, Dr. Samir Al-Khatib, Chairman of the Syrian-Belarusian Friendship Association, said that work is going on to develop relations between the Syrian People's Assembly and the Belarusian Parliament. A broad agenda was agreed upon during the visit of the Friendship Association to the Belarusian Embassy, whether on the economic or social side and we hope to reach the best relations between the two parliaments of the two countries.
