Damascus,(ST) - Minister of Water Resources Eng. Nabil al -Hassan discussed here on Saturday during a meeting with a Russian government delegation headed by Deputy Minister of Energy Kirill Moldetov on prospects of cooperation and development of joint relations between the two countries in the field of water sector.

The Minister briefed the delegation, which includes deputy ministers of transport and industry and a number of senior managers and representatives of Russian companies, on the work of the ministry and the damage caused to the sources of water facilities. He noted the need to expand cooperation between the two countries and the rehabilitation of the dams of Euphrates, Ba'ath and Tishreen, as well as rehabilitation of the main water outlet at Al Khafsa station in Aleppo Governorate.

Mr. al-Hassan pointed out that the ministry is seeking to complete important projects during the next phase such as two water purification plants in Lattakia and Hama governorates, noting that the 16 October station in Lattakia will contribute to providing water to the city and some villages in the governorate suffering from lack of drinking water in Homs and a number of neighboring villages.

For his part, Mr. Moldetov pointed to the readiness of the Russian side to conduct studies and evaluation of the basins. The first step in this regard should be the formation of a technical working group to determine the priorities and develop a comprehensive program, pointing out that the projects put forward by the ministry are under consideration and appropriate decisions will be taken during the committee meeting which will be held in the Russian city of Sochi on October 9.

The meeting was attended by the assistants of the Minister of Water Resources for Administrative and Technical Affairs, the Director General of the General Authority for Water Resources and a number of the central managers of the ministry.

In the same context, the Minister of Electricity, Eng. Mohamed Zuhair Kharbotli discussed with the Russain delegation the prospects of cooperation to rehabilitate the electrical system, especially the generation plants, and to establish important future projects in the reconstruction phase.

Mr. Kharbotli put forward a number of important projects that contribute to the support and stability of the electrical system in Syria, including the expansion of the capacity of the Tishreen station, which feeds the southern region with about up to 600 megawatts, developing and enlarging the capacity of Maharda station, which feeds the central, northern and coastal regions and rehabilitating and operating three groups in the second, third, and fourth thermal Aleppo power stations, each of which has a capacity of 200 MW.

For his part, Mr. Moldtsov said that the Russian side is following up the situation in Syria. During the meeting, they discussed the possibility of rehabilitating the electricity station in Aleppo, pointing out that Russia is ready to finance these projects and prepare studies and plans for starting work, installing equipment and training technical cadres.

He explained that the Russian side has offers to expand the Tishreen and Maharda stations. There is also a presentation of five projects for the integrated circuit station in the Eastern Region, in addition to introducing innovation for electricity projects in case of water shortage through the establishment of dry-cycle projects, pointing out that all technological processes in the stations will be of Russian production.
