Syria, DPRK Discuss Promotion of Economic Relations

Damascus, (ST) -- Minister of Finance Mamoun Hamdan met here on Thursday with a delegation from the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), headed by Deputy Minister of Foreign Economic Affairs Ri Myung-san. The two parties  stressed enhancing economic relations between the two countries and the preparations for the 10th session of the Joint Commission of the two friendly countries scheduled to be held in September in Pyongyang.

 During his meeting with the Korean delegation at the Ministry of Finance, Mr. Hamdan stressed that there are many areas of cooperation between the two sides, which will be discussed in the meetings of the Joint Committee, namely banking, finance, industry, agriculture, oil, communications, technology, sports and social affairs.

The Minister pointed out that the investment areas in Syria are various and promising and can be accessed by the Korean side especially in light of the existence of important opportunities to establish factories in Syria in the fields of technology, agricultural sector and modern irrigation systems, stressing the importance of establishing direct banking relationship to alleviate the unilateral tough measures imposed on the two countries, which hinder the movement of trade exchange and joint economic activity.

For his part, the head of the Korean delegation expressed his happiness with the development of the bilateral relations between the two countries. He addressed an invitation to the Minister of Finance to attend the international economic exhibition to be held on September 25 in Pyongyang, pointing out the need for coordination between the two sides so that the Joint Committee meetings will be held in this period so that the Syrian delegation to participate and brief on the activities of this important exhibition

Regarding the participation of the DPRK in the 59th session of the Damascus International Fair, Mr. Myung San expressed his happiness with the re-launch of the Damascus International Fair because it represents "a pivotal point indicating the recovery of the Syrian economy and the state of security and stability which began to expand in various regions and governorates of Syria,” Stressing the importance of the participation of the Korean side not only by companies on the economic level, but also in cultural and artistic fields where Korean art troupes will hold a number of events and concerts at the Fair.
