Crisis in Syria is a conflict between East and west, says Mahathir Mohammad

TEHRAN, (ST) _ The Former Malaysian Prime Minister, Mahathir Mohammad, sees that the main reason for what is going on in Syria is the Zionist entity which occupied the Arab territories with a US-British support.

In an interview with the Iranian Students News Agency (ISNA), Mahathir Mohammad said that the crisis in Syria turned into a conflict between East and West, noting that foreign powers are exerting all possible efforts to overthrow the Syrian government.

He underscored the necessity of disarming the disputed parties and launching a peaceful dialogue to solve the crisis.

On the other hand, the former Malaysian PM said:"The US wants to impose hegemony over the whole world, so everybody must submit to the US. But Iran has not done so that is why they are against Iran."

Equations in Syria Not Changed by Recognition of Terrorists

TEHRAN (ST)- A senior Iranian military commander blasted Washington for recognizing the Syrian rebels and terrorists." the move cannot change the military equations in Syria in the interest of the foreign states".

"The US recognition of terrorists in Syria revealed the obvious terrorist nature of the ruling regime in the US again, but the move cannot change the foreigners' military and aggressive equations in that country to the benefit of the alien forces," Deputy Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces for Basij and Defense Culture Brigadier General Massoud Jazzayeri said on Wednesday.

"the Syrian people will continue resistance against the plots hatched by the US and its allies against their independence and freedom," stressed Jazzayeri .

Despite the western media's anti-Syrian propaganda and all pressures, he added, the situation in Syria is under the control of President Bashar al-Assad's government.

Syria has been experiencing unrest since March 2011 with organized attacks by well-armed gangs against Syrian police forces and border guards being reported across the country.

Hundreds of people, including members of the security forces, have been killed, when some protest rallies turned into armed clashes.

The government blames outlaws, saboteurs, and armed terrorist groups for the deaths, stressing that the unrest is being orchestrated from abroad.

The US daily, Washington Post, reported in May that the Syrian rebels and terrorist groups battling the Syrian  government have received significantly more and better weapons in recent weeks, a crime paid for by some Arab  states and coordinated by the United States.

The newspaper, quoting opposition activists and US and foreign officials, reported that Obama administration officials emphasized the administration has expanded contacts with opposition military forces to provide by some Arab states.

According to the report, material is being stockpiled in Damascus, in Idlib near the Turkish border and in Zabadani on the Lebanese border.

Opposition activists who several months ago said the rebels were running out of ammunition said in May that the flow of weapons  has significantly increased after a decision by Saudi Arabia, Qatar.

US Recognition of Syrian “Opposition Coalition” Violates Geneva Statement- Lavrov

MOSCOW, (ST)- The US  recognition of the “Syrian Opposition Coalition” violates the agreements stipulated in the Geneva statement which called for launching a comprehensive Syrian dialogue between the Syrian government and the opposition, stressed Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.

In a press conference at the conclusion of his talks with his Slovak counterpart Miroslav Lajack in Moscow on Wednesday, Lavrov expressed surprise that the United States had recognized a newly formed Syrian “opposition coalition” as the representative of the Syrian people.

“By recognizing the coalition, it seems that the United States decided to place all bets on the military victory of the opposition," Lavrov said.

"This contradicts the agreements set in the Geneva statement that proposes the start of an all-out Syrian dialogue,” he added.

He stressed that Moscow will ask Washington for clarification on its view regarding the situation and the future moves.

"It is natural that we will talk to our American colleagues to know how they will act in light of this declaration, which is for Russia an unexpected turning point,” Lavrov said.

However, Lavrov pointed out that during recent consultations in Geneva, the American side showed understanding for the need to prepare suitable environment for a comprehensive Syrian dialogue, with the participation of the government.
