US Biggest Violator of NPT: al-Jaafari

NEW YORK- Syria believes in the importance of multilateral work for nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation, said Syria's Permanent Representative to the United Nations Bashar Al-Jaafari, stressing that the United States is the biggest violator of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and it keeps covering up the Israeli occupation entity's violations in this respect.

In a speech at the 3rd session of the Preparatory Commission  of the Review Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), al-Jaafari said “Syria took the initiative in 1968 to join the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons and signed the agreement of guarantees with the Agency in 1992… it also presented in 2003 a draft resolution to establish a region free from WMD, but the US obstructed that step”.

In turn, al-Jaafari added, some western states helped “Israel” establish Dimona nuclear center and offered it the substances, experiences and nuclear technology, a step that enabled “Israel” to possess hundreds of nuclear heads.

As for the site of Deir Ezzor, al-Jaafari affirmed that Syria has cooperated with the International Atomic energy Agency  in a positive and constructive way regarding the nature of Deir Ezzor site which was attacked by the Israeli warplanes, coming from the Turkish airspace.

“My country has also allowed the Agency’s investigators to visit  the site in June, 2008 and freely move in its surroundings,” al-Jaafari added, according to SANA.
