Al-Jaafri: Meeting of Experts Only Result of Sixth Round of Geneva Intra-Syrian Talks

GENEVA, (ST)- Head of the Syrian Arab Republic's Delegation to the Intra-Syrian Talks in Geneva Bashar al-Jaafari has underlined  that the only result of the sixth round of talks in Geneva was the meeting of experts.

In a press conference on Friday following his meeting with UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura, al-Jaafari said that "yesterday there was a meeting of our experts and those of the UN envoy, and this was the only result of this round of talks".

Al-Jaafari pointed out that the experts' meeting is a purely technical issue aiming to find common items between points relating to the constitutional process, provided in the paper on basic principles, and the political talks at the delegations level.

The Syrian diplomat said that the four-day talks didn't discuss any of the four baskets agreed on in previous meetings. They only topic tackled was the expert meeting.

The Geneva talks coincided with a new flagrant US aggression on Syrian army forces on al-Tanf road in the Syrian Badia and a horrible massacre by Daesh terrorists in Hama countryside which claimed the lives of dozens of innocent people.

Al-Jaafari described yesterday's airstrike by the US-led coalition on Syrian army points as a new act of aggression and a massacre by the U.S..

He added that he discussed the US airstrike at today's meeting with Staffan de Mistura, noting that focus is always made on fighting  the terrorism being practiced against Syria by the terrorist organizations and by some countries like America, France and Britain.

Regarding the issue of the de-escalation zones, al-Jaafari clarified that mechanisms on implementing the agreement on de-escalation zones in Syria have not started working yet, stressing that the agreement on de-escalation relates only to certain areas and does not cover the entire Syrian territory .

On the US claims about a so-called "crematorium" at Sednaya Prison, al-Jaafari said that "such lies are not new, because every time we meet in Geneva or Astana or even in the Security Council a massacre is fabricated and a chemical attack or bombardment of civilian sites is being carried out."

This fabricated story by the American Intelligence aims among other things at putting political pressure on the Syrian government, pave the way for the visit of US President Donald Trump to Riyadh as he is talking about establishing a Saudi and Gulf-funded new Arab Islamic Nato, which is a funny story, according to al-Jaafari.

De Mistura: Drafting Syria’s Constitution is up to the Syrian people

According to the Syrian News Agency (SANA), the UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura said that the unofficial meetings of experts that started in Geneva will contribute to facilitating the political process for resolving the crisis in Syria, and that drafting Syria’s constitution is up to the Syrian people, SANA reported.

In a press conference in Geneva on Friday, De Mistura announced the conclusion of sixth round of intra-Syrian talks in Geneva, which was a short session as was intended and which focused on strengthening the political process, voicing belief that it was a success in this regard.

De Mistura said that the experts meetings do not aim at drafting a new constitution or any law for Syria, as this is up to the Syrian people; rather they aim at establishing basis that allow the Syrian people to do that in the context of the political solution as per UN resolution no. 2254.

He noted that the agenda based on the four baskets which was agreed upon earlier is still standing, and preparations are underway for another round of talks which might begin in June.
