The World Must Unite Against the US-Saudi-Zionist entity Proxy War in Syria

By Tony Cartalucci

US, Saudi Arabia, and Israel have conspired to destroy Syria by way of arming sectarian extremists since 2007.

The West now admits it, along with Saudi Arabia and Qatar, have provided thousands of tons of weapons to terrorists in Syria – while also conceding that Al Qaeda’s Syrian franchise, Jabhat al-Nusra is the best armed, most well equipped militant front in the conflict.

US, Saudi, Israeli-backed terrorists are now committing a myriad of horrific atrocities against all of Syria’s population meaning neither “democracy” nor even “sectarianism” drives the conflict, but rather the destruction of Syria in its entirety.

US State Department acknowledges Syria faces threat from Al Qaeda, demands blockade of arms/aid from reaching government to fight terrorists the US State Department admits are present in every major Syrian city.

Since 2007, the US, Saudi Arabia, and Israel have been documented as conspiring to overthrow the Syrian government by way of sectarian extremists, including groups “sympathetic to Al Qaeda,” and in particular, the "Muslim Brotherhood". While the West has attempted to portray the full-scale conflict beginning in Syria in 2011 as first, a “pro-democracy uprising,” to now a “sectarian conflict,” recent atrocities carried out by US-Saudi-Israeli proxies have shifted the assault to include unwilling to participate in the destruction of the Syrian state.

Such attacks included a mortar bombardment of Damascus University, killing 15 and injuring dozens more, as well as the brutal slaying of two prominent clerics – the latest of which was beheaded, his body paraded through the streets of Aleppo, and his head hung from the mosque he preached in. While the West attempts to mitigate these events by labeling the victims as “pro-government,” the reality is that the forces fighting inside Syria are funded, armed, directed, and politically supported from abroad – and therefore do not represent any of the Syrian people’s interests, including those Syrians who do not support the government.

It is abundantly clear that the West’s goal is neither to institute “democracy,” nor even take sides in a “sectarian conflict,” but rather carry out the complete and permanent destruction of Syria as a nation-state, sparing no one.

Such a proxy war exists contra to any conceivable interpretation of “international law.” The world is left with a moral imperative to not only denounce this insidious conflict brought upon the Syrian people, compounded and perpetuated entirely by external interests, but demands that concrete action is taken to ensure that this act of aggression is brought to an end.

The US, UK, Saudi Arabia and Qatar have admitted to colluding together, flooding Syria with thousands of tons of weapons via Jordan to Syria’s south, and NATO-member Turkey to Syria’s north. And in an otherwise inexplicable conundrum, while the likes of US Secretary of

Syrian opposition sources  estimate there are 15-20 different brigades fighting in and around Damascus now, each with up to 150 fighters. Many of them have Islamic tendencies and bear black-and-white Islamic flags or al-Qaeda-style flags on their Facebook pages. There is also a presence of Jabhat al-Nusra, one of the strongest Islamic terrorist groups fighting alongside the rebels.

The US State Department’s own statement regarding the designation of al-Nusra as a listed Al Qaeda terror organization states:

According to the US State Department, al-Nusra is carrying out hundreds of attacks with a wide array of weaponry, across the entire nation of Syria, indicating a massive front and implying an equally massive network of logistical support, including foreign sponsorship. What’s more, is that the US State Department acknowledges al-Nusra’s presence even in cities close to Syria’s borders where the CIA is admittedly overseeing the distribution of weapons and cash. The New York Times, in their June 2012 article, “C.I.A. Said to Aid in Steering Arms to Syrian Opposition,” reported that:

A small number of C.I.A. officers are operating secretly in southern Turkey, helping allies decide which Syrian opposition militants  across the border will receive arms to fight the Syrian government, according to American officials and Arab intelligence officers.

And in New York Times’ more recent March 2013 article, “Arms Airlift to Syria Rebels Expands, With Aid From C.I.A.,” it is admitted that weapons are being funneled into Syria across both its borders with Turkey and Jordan:

Simultaneously, arms and equipment were being purchased by Saudi Arabia in Croatia and flown to Jordan on Jordanian cargo planes for rebels working in southern Syria and for retransfer to Turkey for rebels groups operating from there, several officials said.

The US State Department acknowledges that the well-armed, prominent terror front al-Nusra is operating in the very areas the CIA is feeding weapons and cash into.

The Destruction of Syria Began in 2007, Not 2011

While the West has attempted to reclaim Syria as part of its sphere of influence for decades, concrete plans for the latest proxy war were laid at least as early as 2007. It was admitted in 2007 that the US, Saudi Arabia, and Israel conspired together to fund, arm, and direct sectarian extremists including militants “sympathetic” to Al Qaeda, particularly the Muslim Brotherhood, against the governments of Iran and Syria. In Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Seymour Hersh’s 2007 New Yorker article,  “The Redirection: Is the Administration’s new policy benefiting our enemies in the war on terrorism?” the conspiracy was described as follows:

To undermine Iran, which is predominantly Shiite, the Bush Administration has decided, in

Some of the core tactics of the redirection are not public, however. The clandestine operations have been kept secret, in some cases, by leaving the execution or the funding to the Saudis, or by finding other ways to work around the normal congressional appropriations process, current and former officials close to the Administration said.

Mention of the Muslim Brotherhood already receiving aid even in 2007 was also made:

It is clear that the US, Saudi Arabia, and Israel planned to use sectarian extremists against the nation of Syria starting at least as early as 2007, and it is clear that now these sectarian extremists are carrying out the destruction of Syria with a massive torrent of weapons and cash provided by the US and its regional allies, just as was described by Hersh’s report.

A Moral Imperative to Save Syria

Syria is under attack by an insidious, premeditated foreign assault, intentionally using terrorist proxies in direct and complete violation of any conceivable interpretation of both national and international law. The world has a moral imperative to support the Syrian people and their government as they fight this assault – both politically and logistically.

The US is directly responsible for the emergence and perpetuation of Al Qaeda and other extremist groups in Syria.

A united front between nations against this wanton state sponsorship of terrorism is needed – with nations pledging political and logistical support to the Syrian people to defeat this open conspiracy. Individually, we can identify, boycott, and permanently replace the corporate-financier interests who conceived of and are driving this agenda. Failure to stop such wide scale criminality against the Syrian people now, will only invite greater criminality against us all in the near future.

Fake democracy and a far more massive supply of real weapons of mass destruction.

After the tenth anniversary of the destruction of Iraq passed with the usual historic distortion and pieties from established power about the waste and rationalizations about why we had to do it, America’s bipartisan war party has even more loudly revived the same lies and logic perversion used to get support for that slaughter. Without even a hint of embarrassment, political puppets of wealth from congress to the state department to the white house are again talking about gas and chemical weapons of mass destruction, substituting  Syrian government for Hussein of Iraq .

Media fulfills its responsibility as corporate stenographer to power by reporting these charges, without a blushing reminder that this is the same puppet-speak that was only called by its rightful name after hundreds of thousands were dead, an educated class had become refugees and a materially developed secular nation had been broken up into a scattering of underdeveloped sectarian neighborhoods. This process was repeated in Libya but without invasion and simply by using NATO servants to front for our mass bombings. That assault on morality and reason included the usual charges of genocide – when anyone dies in a foreign country our rulers don’t like, it’s called genocide . Though not accepted by any but the most tortured minds, our leaders, these tales from the toilets of degeneracy helped reduce another nation developed along lines not totally in keeping with the desires of the Master-Race-Chosen-People deities of the west. Libya was transformed into a shattered place with freedom for high finance and oil companies and near chaos for almost everyone else. The latest atrocities on Syria seem to indicate that while the imperial cabal dominated by the MRCP minority of multi-billionaires and their servants flounders in deadly crisis, it’s intention is not only to spread terrorism only, but spread its affliction until the entire global population joins the terminal patients in the universal intensive care ward that is being created by global capitalism.

The banking crisis that began in the USA and spread to Europe has brought near total destruction of the social democratic policies that had previously saved capitalism. The economic cancer that gripped the world in the 1930s was placed in remission for more than a generation by the relatively enlightened – for capital – policies called Keynesianism. These created government spending to prop up anarchic markets that were collapsing under exclusive minority control. It wisely – for capital – used tax money to create jobs, food, clothing and shelter for great masses of people, so that they might not only refrain from revolting against minority power, but also consume all the goods and services they created in order to profit that minority.

The material improvement in the lives of many – though far from most – enabled a generation of relative peaceful control for great wealth in the west, even while the world was consumed by more wars that killed more millions, forgotten because unlike the Euros who perished in wars one and two, these were mostly from the darker skinned members of our race, the third world majority. They were and remain either colonized, neo-colonized or otherwise economically subjugated and thus remaining invisible to newly created middle classes subjected to mind numbing consciousness control and mind managing entertainment that often passes for news on TV. This newly affluent class, by peasant standards, consumed billions of dollars of mostly needless garbage advertised into being absolutely necessary-for-survival drugs, cosmetics, therapies, toys, pets, gadgets and processed foods, while financing with its tax dollars and plastic debt a massive version of fake democracy and a far more massive supply of real weapons of mass destruction.

Already badly overstretched and financed only by imaginary electronic funds backed by very real military power, imperial dictatorship is creating new problems to bolster its war state while simultaneously destroying a civil society hardly conceived by moral values but nonetheless preventing complete physical breakdown. While so-called “austerity” is employed to cut government spending – the only thing that has maintained MRCP capitalism for a generation – while at the same time attempting to militarily protect finance from any and all national models daring to attempt going a different way finds more warfare threatened, with these idiotic fantasy charges to make the public accepting of the need to cut back on their meals in order to buy more guns.

Meanwhile, the financial crisis has reached new lows in Europe, especially Cyprus where the bailout not only involves robbing taxpayers but stealing money from their bank accounts. Those in America who think this is a laughable situation might start removing their money from these corporate casinos and placing then under the mattress the way their grandparents did. Of course, authority may ultimately attempt confiscation of those mattresses so maybe the second amendment gun lobby fundamentalists have an argument approaching reason? No, but given present conditions, any crackpot theory will get some hearing. Unfortunately, the most crackpot of all, from capital central in the USA, is getting far too much.

Palestinian Journalists jailed by Occupation Forces

Israeli occupation forces have launched a campaign of arbitrary arrests against media professionals in the West Bank and Jerusalem.   Several were shot at while covering demonstrations

The Addameer Association for Human Rights and Prisoner Support is deeply concerned about the increasing number of arrests of journalists and communications professionals in the West Bank and Jerusalem, especially since the beginning of this year, with records of numerous cases of detention without clear and specific charges, which reveals a process of arbitrary imprisonment in order to silence the broadcast news coverage of the current situation in Palestine and hurt freedom of expression.

The Addameer recorded 13 detentions of journalists in Israeli jails. Most of them were arrested this year, with six journalists arrested during the first three months of this year, while last year, two were arrested.

There is also the case of a journalist held under house arrest in the city of Jerusalem, and who was forbidden to enter the West Bank.

Next, chronologically, are the names of the journalists detained in Israeli jails:

One. Yasin Abu Khadir of Shuafat / Jerusalem.  He is the oldest Palestinian journalist held in Israeli prisons. He was arrested on 27/12/1987 and faces a sentence of 28 years. He worked at the newspaper Al-Quds.

2nd. Mahmoud Issa, of Anata / Jerusalem. He was arrested on 06/03/1993 and faces three life sentences and 41 years. He was working at the newspaper AlhaqAlhoriya, published in the Palestinian lands occupied in 1948.

3rd. Mohammed Taj from Tubas / Jenin. Detained since 19.11.2003 and sentenced to 14 years in prison. He worked as a writer and journalist in the Front for the Liberation of Palestine.

4th. Ahmed El Saifi, Birzeit / Ramallah. He was a student at Birzeit University, where he was studying journalism. He was arrested on 08.19.2009 and sentenced to 19 years in prison.

5th. Amer Abu Arfa, Hebron. Administrative detainee since 20/08/2011, without formal charge or trial. He worked as correspondent of Shihab Agency.

6th. Sharif Rajoub in Hebron. Detained since 06.03.2012 and awaiting trial. He worked in radio Sawt Al-Aqsa Mosque in Hebron.

7th. Murad Abu Baha, Ramallah. Detained since 15/06/2012. Awaiting trial. He worked as a press officer of the Legislative Council in Ramallah.

8th. Annan Ajawi / Jenin. 28 years old and was arrested on 16/01/2013, when he was returning from his trip to Egypt. Detained without formal charge or trial. He worked as a journalist at several institutions.

9th. Mohamed Saba'na of Qabatiya / Jenin. Arrested on 17/02/2013 in his return from Jordan. He is in custody until investigations are completed. Mohamed  Saba'na is a cartoonist.

10. MusabShawar of Hebron. He was arrested on 25/02/2013 and yet imprisoned without formal charge. He worked at Radio Hebron, as a presenter on the program which addressed the situation of Palestinian prisoners.

11. BakrAttili, from Nablus. He is 27 years old and was arrested on 06/03/2013. Detained without formal charge or trial. He worked as a photographer and independent producer of many TV channels.

12. Tareq Abu Zeid, Jenin. He was arrested on 08/03/2013 and is in custody until investigations are completed. He worked as a correspondent for Al-Aqsa TV.

13. WalidKhaled of Sakaka / Salfit. He was arrested on 10/03/2013 and is in custody until investigations are completed. He was the editor of the newspaper Palestine Today.

It is noteworthy that the journalist RasimObeidat was banned from areas of the West Bank since 01.30.2012 without specific justification for this impediment. Importantly, such a ban is a violation of the laws and conventions on freedom of journalists and the full exertion of their work.

Besides the difficulties of the work of journalists who work under harsh conditions to cover events in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, it is observed that there are severe restrictions imposed by occupation forces, and violence against journalists and photographers impeding them from pursuing their work for the transmission of international developments.

We recall here the injuries suffered by the photojournalist Atta E'oissat and Mahfouz Abu Turkish journalist Israeli forces shot tear gas and rubber bullets in the occupied city of Jerusalem. And that on 08/03, the photographer HaithamKhatib was directly hit by bombs and photojournalist Jihad El Kadi was shot in the abdomen while covering clashes in the Ofer checkpoint, near Ramallah.

The Addameer Association strongly condemns the continued harassment committed by the Israeli occupation forces against journalists and reporters. This practice is a clear violation of human and professional rights.  It is a flagrant violation of all laws, international norms  and conventions that guarantee freedom of opinion and information. Addameer also believes that the arbitrary detention and violence against Palestinian journalists is part of a systematic policy aimed at silencing the Palestinian media.

Finally, Addameer deplores the silence of international institutions regarding the situation of Palestinian journalists, jailing, applying direct pressure and asks the authorities and human rights organizations to demand the immediate release of the journalists and media professionals held in Israeli jails.

A Win-Win in Infrastructure – The Durban BRICS Summit

Written by: Donald Kaberuka, President, African Development Bank –

The new world order comes to Durban this week – for the fifth BRICS Summit, and the first in Africa. Dilma Rousseff, Vladimir Putin, Manmohan Singh, Xi Jinping and Jacob Zuma represent a changing world, as gravity and power gradually shift from North to South, and West to East. Between them, they preside over nearly half of the world’s population, and nearly a quarter of its GDP.

As well as Heads of Government, the BRICS business community will also come together in Durban, and all this under the gaze of the world’s media. It is clear that all will pursue themes within themes. In engaging in enlightened shared interest, they will look, too, to their own individual countries’ interest. By coming to Durban, they also draw focus on Africa. In looking at a host of issues – from the world’s hotspots to its backwaters, from green jobs to blue-sky thinking – they will, above all, focus on two: trade and investment.

The relationship between Africa and the BRICS has grown dramatically, with trade levels increasing ten-fold in ten years, to a value of some US $340 billion a year. And Africa itself is the lynchpin of the trade triangle with Asia and South America. Africa-China trade last year was 20 times what it had been at the turn of the century.

All five of these huge countries and economies had to begin at the beginning, by addressing the infrastructure gap: ensuring the road, rail, ports and energy to power and empower their societies.

The BRICS also bring to the table the experience and the expertise of their development trajectories. They bring knowledge and investment in entering the global supply and value chains – from agribusiness, to IT, to South African companies at work north of the Limpopo.

The BRICS countries are already part of the African infrastructure solution. We see this in everything from Brazilian road and rail investment through Vale in Mozambique, to Indian telecommunications investment through Bharti Airtel in Chad, to Chinese investment through its Railway Engineering Cooperation Group and Sinohydro in road, rail and health infrastructure in the DRC. We could say the same many times over, with different examples in different countries.

The time has come for an idea which was first floated two years ago, and which can take the relationship to the next level: channeling the significant surplus into high return infrastructure projects – a win-win proposition.

Sixty percent of the African Development Bank’s annual loans and grants of US $5 billion are for infrastructure. With a leveraging power of one to six, we are able to mobilize additional resources. But the funding gap for African infrastructure is large, and this is still a drop in the ocean. We know the priorities spelt out in the PIDA, and in the private sector-led Infrastructure Consortium for Africa, which the Bank also manages.

And Africa itself is mobilizing internal resources. In 2013, the Bank plans to launch an African Infrastructure Facility that will combine sovereign and non-sovereign resources – both domestic and international – to invest in carrying Africa over the threshold of its infrastructural and developmental doorway.

Journalists Who Got Iraq Wrong 10 Years Ago and Syria Wrong Now Should Be Sacked

Although Cable News Network (CNN) no longer reports news but blatant propaganda and worthless reports on insignificant celebrities, it and other media operations should not be permitted to engage in the same war-mongering today that they fostered ten years ago.

On the very day that America was reflecting on the preposterous reasons it attacked and occupied Iraq ten years ago – March 20, 2003 – CNN and other broadcasters were hyping a phony story about Syria using WMDs – weapons of mass destruction – against civilians. Ten years ago, Saddam Hussein was used as an international bogeyman for his possession of WMDs. However, the claims of Iraqi WMDs were based on false and forged intelligence. And the claims that the Syrian  government is using chemical weapons are just as fallacious…

CNN’s neo-Conservative main stay Wolf Blitzer, who once served as a mouthpiece for the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), an unregistered foreign agency of the Israeli government operating as a pressure group on the U.S. government, interviewed Senate Intelligence Committee Chairwoman Dianne Feinstein of California and House Intelligence Committee Chairman Mike Rogers of Michigan on the «breaking news» that Syria was using chemical weapons against its own population. Blitzer, of course, engaged in the very same theatrical propaganda and war mongering over Saddam’s alleged possession of mass destruction.

Blitzer, who would never be found issuing forth such hyperbolic announcements about Israel’s possession of 400 tactical and city-busting nuclear weapons, as well as its germ and chemical warfare agents, engages in the very same faux journalism today as he practiced in the lead up to the invasion of Iraq. Simply stated, Blitzer and his ilk at Fox News and at various other media entities in Washington, New York, London, and other cities are not journalists. They are ciphers for vested interests that profit from war and Americans dying for Israeli causes.

It is clear that the corrupted media is following the same playbook for Syria as it used in reporting on Iraq. Ten years to the day that Americans and people around the world were warned about the «existential threat» from Saddam Hussein’s WMDs, the wire services and other media showed pictures of civilians outside of Aleppo who were said to have been injured from a chlorine gas attack launched by Syrian forces. The source was the Rupert Murdoch-owned Fox News. It is astounding that after revelations about the unprofessional actions of Murdoch’s newspapers in London hacking into private cell phone voice mail accounts, anyone would give credence to any of his trash publications, which now include The Wall Street Journal and The Times of London.

There were video reports that 16 people in the village of Khan al-Assal, outside of Aleppo, were killed with another 86 wounded. However, since the beginning of the crisis in Syria bogus videos and photographs have been offered successfully to a begging news media, eager for scenes of blood and mayhem. Moreover, the victims of the attack were said to be largely Syrian army regulars and members of pro-government civilians.

Interestingly, the White House denied any knowledge of any chemical attack. However, there were more legitimate reports that the chlorine gas attack was launched by CIA- and NATO-supported Syrian rebels. Some governments cited the danger of Syria’s arsenal of chemical weapons falling into the hands of the pro-Al Qaeda al-Nusra Front, which is aided financially and logistically by the governments of Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates, as well as the self-proclaimed Emirate of Cyrenaica in eastern Libya, over which the NATO-installed government in Tripoli has little to no control.

Syria’s terrorists are carbon copies of the motley crew of Iraqi expatriates hauled out of their penthouse apartments and suburban homes in the United States and Britain to lead the interim Iraqi government appointed by a U.S. viceroy, Paul “Jerry” Bremer, a protégé of the all-time American war criminal Henry Kissinger. Iraq’s rebel movement had its feather merchant in the personage of Ahmad Chalabi, the international fraudster who was placed in charge of the CIA-created Iraqi National Congress. The Syrian National Coalition “elected” as the prime minister of the Syrian government-in-exile Ghassan Hitto, a U.S. citizen from Texas who has worked for various information technology companies – read that as companies with contracts for the U.S. military-intelligence complex – and who has been involved with various Muslim Brotherhood-affiliated causes linked to the government of Qatar. Hitto, an ethnic Syrian Kurd, demanded that Syria’s United Nations seat be handed over to the Syrian rebels. Like the exiled Chalabi with most Iraqis, most people inside Syria had never heard of Hitto before he became one of Uncle Sam’s new “nephews” in the Middle East.

Another member of the Syrian opposition is long-time anti-government figure Farid “Frank” Ghadry, a Syrian-American entrepreneur who has, like Hitto, been a part of the U.S. military-intelligence complex, having worked for the contractor EG&G Intertech Inc. before starting his own firm, International TechGroup Inc. Ghadry is a darling of the same neo-con power structure in Washington that promoted Chalabi and his cronies. Ghadry has appeared before the Knesset in Israel and has penned such pro-Israeli pieces as “Israel Builds for Nobel Prizes, Arabs Build for Suicide Bombers.” While such polemics play well to the six-figure salaried officials of Israeli-financed non-profit think tanks in Washington and suburban Virginia and Maryland, they have no impact and generate hostility inside countries like Syria, Iraq, or occupied Palestine.

Not one of the media «chatterers» who advanced the false notion of Iraq’s WMDs has paid for their professional misconduct. Instead, they have been left to promote further false stories that provided journalistic cover for American intervention in Libya to overthrow Muammar Qaddafi and NATO’s force infusion into Mali’s inter-ethnic and civilian-military conflicts.

Among the reporters who questioned the Bush administration’s bone-headed decision to invade and occupy Iraq based on non-existent intelligence were Knight-Ridder’s Jonathan Landay and Warren Strobel. The reporters’ accounts of the fake intelligence being offered up by the Bush-Cheney neo-cons were largely ignored by the press because similar information had not appeared in either The New York Times or The Washington Post. Both “newspapers of record” had embedded within their reporting staffs and editorial ranks individuals who were more loyal to the whims of the Bush administration than to the canons of journalism or to their readership. Unfortunately, it is the likes of Wolf Blitzer and total light-weights of puffery like Anderson Cooper (the son of billionaire heiress Gloria Vanderbilt), Charles Krauthammer, William Kristol, Judith Miller, and others who continue to appear on the television news programs to advance neo-con agendas in the Middle East and other regions of the world, including Venezuela, China, and Pakistan.

Ten years later, the public is still being subjected to the same sort of blatant propaganda and falsehoods about Syria. Working with information operations military and intelligence personnel that cooked up the Iraq WMD lies, these same neo-conservative gnomes and wizards now conjure up their next deadly brew of disinformation and propaganda designed to ensure a future American and NATO takeover of Syria, Yemen, Mali, Sudan, Algeria, and beyond.

Of course, the neo-con journalists can argue the point that they were just reporting what the actual war criminals, Dick Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld, Paul Wolfowitz, Douglas Feith, and other officials were claiming. The Nazis also had their propagandists and the Nuremburg War Crimes Tribunal rejected their plea that they were «just following orders».

Washington Post: US military has plans to bomb and send forces in Syria

The US military has prepared plans ranging from aerial bombings to deploying troops to “seize [chemical] weapons sites” inside Syria but has reservations against such moves, fearing a political backlash to the US intervention as well as lack of coordination with its regional allies.

“If we had to go in tomorrow, I’d say we aren’t ready,” said an unnamed Obama administration official “involved in the preparations for securing Syria’s chemical weapons” quoted in a Washington Post report on Monday.

“One thing we want to avoid is having one group securing the sites and another group bombing them,” added the official who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Following reports of a chemical attack near the Syrian major city of Aleppo by foreign-sponsored terrorist gangs trying to overthrow the Syrian government, US President Barack Obama said he had directed his “teams” to “find out precisely whether or not this red line was crossed,” the report adds, suggesting an American effort to blame the attack on the Syrian government.

The Obama administration “has sent thousands of protective suits and more than 150 military personnel to help train special forces teams” near Syria’s border with Jordan, where it claims “the largest” chemical arms depots are located, the report adds, citing US and Middle Eastern officials.

Pointing to efforts by the American military to work with “regional allies” to prepare responses “if events require seizing [Syrian] weapons sites, the report does not, however, mention any specific allies and whether the Israeli regime would also be involved in the potential scheme.

More aggressive US military options, according to the report, involve “a plan to destroy government air force to prevent it from using aerial munitions.”

It further cites American officials as looking into the possibility “to destroy much of chemical arsenal,” but fearing that “dispersing chemicals” could cause widespread casualties, they would have to send in “highly trained operatives” to place and detonate explosives at the sites, rather than bombarding them.

The development comes as the US-sponsored anti-Damascus coalition group was reported on a verge of collapse following the resignation of its top leader, Moaz al-Khatib, after a Syrian-born US citizen was appointed a prime minister of a so-called interim government.

Arms Airlift to Terrorists in Syria Expands, With C.I.A. Aid

With help from the C.I.A., Arab governments and Turkey have sharply increased their military aid to terrorists in Syria in recent months, expanding a secret airlift of arms and equipment, according to air traffic data, interviews with officials in several countries and the accounts of rebel commanders.

The airlift, which began on a small scale in early 2012 and continued intermittently through last fall, expanded into a steady and much heavier flow late last year, the data shows. It has grown to include more than 160 military cargo flights by Jordanian, Saudi and Qatari military-style cargo planes landing at Esenboga Airport near Ankara, and, to a lesser degree, at other Turkish and Jordanian airports.

From offices at secret locations, American intelligence officers have helped the Arab governments shop for weapons, including a large procurement from Croatia, and have vetted rebel commanders and groups to determine who should receive the weapons as they arrive, according to American officials speaking on the condition of anonymity. The C.I.A. declined to comment on the shipments or its role in them.

The Turkish government has had oversight over much of the program, down to affixing transponders to trucks ferrying the military goods through Turkey so it might monitor shipments as they move by land into Syria, officials said. The scale of shipments was very large, according to officials familiar with the pipeline and to an arms-trafficking investigator who assembled data on the cargo planes involved.

“A conservative estimate of the payload of these flights would be 3,500 tons of military equipment,” said Hugh Griffiths, of the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, who monitors illicit arms transfers.

“The intensity and frequency of these flights,” he added, are “suggestive of a well-planned and coordinated clandestine military logistics operation.”

Simultaneously, arms and equipment were being purchased by Saudi Arabia in Croatia and flown to Jordan on Jordanian cargo planes for rebels working in southern Syria and for retransfer to Turkey for rebels groups operating from there, several officials said.
