US Massive Setback

The UN General Assembly unanimous vote on Jerusalem as the capital of Palestine is a massive setback for the United States. The resolution was a step in the right direction and a blow to Trump's announcement. The UN members had shown that dignity and sovereignty are not for sale. The illegal decision made by the US administration to recognize al-Quds as  Israel's capital and move its embassy to al-Quds had proven beyond any doubt that the United States only thinks about maximizing the interests of the Zionist regime without any respect for the legitimate rights of Palestinians, including their right to self-determination.

The United Nations General Assembly has unanimously voted in favor of a resolution that calls on the US to withdraw its controversial recognition of al-Quds as Israeli "capital. "The 193-nation Assembly adopted the resolution  by a decisive vote of 128 to 9, with 35 abstentions. The vote is a resounding negative reply to US President Donald Trump's intimidation in reference to his threat of reprisals against countries that support the measure. Before the vote was held at the General Assembly, Trump had warned that "we're watching," threatening reprisals against countries that back the al-Quds resolution. The vote is a victory for Palestine. This decision reaffirms once again that the just Palestinian cause enjoys the support of international law, and no decision by any party can change the reality.

The US stance stresses, once again, that Washington is paying no heed to the international law and flagrantly violates resolutions of the UN Security Council and all international circles on the legal status of al-Quds. The US, through such stances, ignores the international legitimacy and its resolutions as it used to do repeatedly towards various issues which affect the international peace and security, and contributes to creating tension in our world with the aim of imposing its hegemony and arrogance.Vetoing the draft resolution on al-Quds, the US stresses its unwavering support to the racist Zionist entity and its hostility to the Arab nation. The Arab ruling regimes, subjugated to the American policies, should correct their polices and adopt stances which fulfill the aspirations of their peoples, match the supreme interests of the Arab nation and maintain the rights and sanctities and they should stop being tools for the implementation of the policies that cause heavy damage to the pan-Arab national security and existence.

No decision can deny the history and culture of the Arab Nation. al-Quds (Jerusalem) is the capital of Palestine and this is remembered by history and documented by facts, realities and all heavenly Sharias. Syria and al-Quds city are facing common enemies who failed to partition Syria, thanks to the sacrifices of the Syrian Arab Army, and they will also fail in partitioning al-Quds city.

The US President’s recognition of al-Quds as capital of the Israeli entity only serves US personal and political interests, and this would not change the reality of al-Quds which is a Palestinian city. The US decision on al-Quds came to serve narrow political interests, but not the interests of peoples. This decision contradicts with the historical facts and the international legitimacy which affirms that al-Quds is an occupied Palestinian city. The U.S. decision constitutes a flagrant violation of Jerusalem’s legal, political and historical position and is considered as part of the usurpation of the Palestinian territory and the displacement of its people. The illegitimate and unilateral U.S. decision breaches the UNSC and UN General Assembly’s resolutions which call on the Israeli occupation to withdraw from territories occupied in 1967, including al-Quds.

The danger of such decisions emerge from the fact that it is an official declaration made by the U.S. Administration which means that it has never been and will never be an eligible mediator or  part of any endeavor to reach a peaceful settlement to the Arab-Israeli conflict. The United States veto on a UN Security Council resolution rejecting US President Donald Trump’s decision on al-Quds stresses once again the U.S. defiance of international laws and violation of international legitimacy principles as it exposes its infinite support to the Israeli entity at the expense of the Palestinian people.

Despite the terrorist war on Syria and its repercussions, Palestine will remain the compass and Syria will spare no effort till full restoration of all occupied Arab territories. Syria's principled stance supports the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination and establishing their independent state with al-Quds as its capital, in addition to guaranteeing the right of refugees to return home in accordance with resolution No. 194 (1948).

The UN should shoulder its responsibilities and implement relevant UNSC and UN General Assembly resolutions to put an end to the suffering of Palestinian people, to end the Israeli occupation of Arab territories and to support the establishment of a Palestinian state with al-Quds as its capital.

There is a dire need, more than ever, for the formation of a new global system to put an end to the US successive administrations’ reckless policies.
